In any institution, the staff plays an integral role in day-to-day operations. For much of its history, the direction of Oak Ridge was influenced by the Superintendent and his team while the task of implementing that vision and managing the daily routine fell to the Attendants.

This exhibit presents a history of each of these roles, including the changing workload, increasing specialization, the wearing of uniforms, and the integration of female attendants in the 1980s. A discussion of the diversification of staff roles at Oak Ridge in later years is likewise included.     

As part of the growth of the Remembering Oak Ridge Digital Archive and Exhibit planned for the coming year, oral history interviews with former staff members of the Oak Ridge division are planned. It was noted during completion of the first phase of this project that while staff may have created many of the archival documents available, they did not share their own thoughts and memories in these records. As interviews are completed, they will be added to this exhibit.
